For the past year Droog Design and Media Guild have been working on the Downloadable Design project. The aim of the project is to create a platform where design goods take the form of a digital blueprint that the consumer takes to the local manufacturer for customizable on-demand production. Through a world wide platform for design distribution two pilots will be implemented to test the developed models and designs.

Possible benefits include lower product costs, less transport and less waste, new design concepts, more variation, possibility of co-creation, lower investment due to no warehousing, more responsive production chains, and involvement of the consumer in the design outcome.

The project currently is ending, delivering a new platform for Downloadable Design that signature designers, brands, manufacturers and the DIY community can use to find each other and the consumer, thus creating new business models for all sides of the production chain.

Media Guild of Waag Society invites the international FabLab community and manufacturing facilities to contact us for information on the platform, the business models and for participation. We want you to be able put the ideas behind the platform to the test and create revenue with the production of DIY and signature design.

This week the SHiFT Conference will take place in Lisbon. The third edition of this conference, looking at the societal impact of technology, has DIY – Do It Yourself as a theme. That is of course a fitting place to discuss FabLab as well!

FabLab Netherlands will be well represented at the conference. Protospace’s Siert Wijnia and RepRap-Yoda Erik de Bruijn, will do a talk and a 3 hour workshop on personal production with a RepRap as well as (hopefully) a laser cutter.

Elmine Wijnia has been busy interviewing and filming us these past months for her short documentary film about the Dutch FabLabs. The english version of the final result will be premiered at the SHiFT conference. She will also give a talk on the meaning of DIY in our digital and networked age. (The Dutch version of the documentary will be screened the first time at next week’s FabTable.) She also made two virals for the conference. One of them even ran as a TV-ad on Portuguese national television. The other is set in a FabLab. After next week’s FabTable both versions will be available in the FabLab video channel hosted with our friends from 23Video.com.

As last speaker of the conference Ton Zijlstra has the job of trying to tie everything discussed at the SHiFT conference together in an overarching narrative. His talk ‘Maker Households’ will discuss the opportunities full digitization bring for local resilience in the context of a resource-limited and fully networked world. Read the proposal in my blog.

Op maandagmiddag 14 juli vindt er wederom een workshop plaats in het FabLab Den Haag. De workshop heeft als thema: kennismaken met het FabLab. Zoals de naam al doet vermoeden wordt er uitleg gegeven over het fenomeen FabLab, de mogelijkheden en onmogelijkheden en uiteraard gaan we gewoon lekker met elkaar aan de slag in een informele sfeer. De workshop start om 13.00 uur en eindigt om 17.00 uur. De mogelijkheid bestaat om voor aanvang te lunchen in de Caballerofabriek; voor 3.00 Euro staat er een buffetje voor je klaar. De prijs voor deze middag bedraagt 50.00 Euro inclusief BTW, koffie of thee en dient vooruit betaald te worden. Meld je op tijd aan bij gertjan@fablab.nl!

FabLab Den Haag bevindt zich in het DEB Design Centrum van de Caballero Fabriek op de Saturnusstraat 60, unit 54 in Den Haag. Voor meer informatie zie FabLab Den Haag.

FabLab staat met een interessant artikel in het tijdschrift Items. “Het tijdschrift bestaat inmiddels zo’n 25 jaar en is het equivalent van een ‘Who is Who’ van de Nederlandse vormgeving. Een kwart eeuw Items is ook een afspiegeling van tendensen en tegenstromingen op het gebied van vormgeving, op de staart getrapt door auteurs wiens visies soms lijnrecht tegenover elkaar staan. Aldus de discussie aanzwengelend die dit vak zo nodig heeft.”, aldus de website van het tijdschrift. Items is te koop bij de goede boekhandel en in de AKO winkels en kost eur 12.50. Prima leesmateriaal voor de komende paasdagen!

Mocht je nieuwsgierig geworden zijn door het artikel, het FabLab is een DIY concept. De eerst volgende algemene introductie workshop vindt plaats in het FabLab in Den Haag op 14 april. Je kunt je hier inschrijven. Op 3 en 4 April is er een workshop ‘Urban Typography’ in het FabLab in Amsterdam. Verder zijn de FabLabs op afspraak te bezoeken.
